Constant Entrustment (1-7-12)
1 Peter 2:23 - "While being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously."
In this passage Peter is talking about our suffering for doing what is right and how this is pleasing to the Lord. He says in the verse 21 that Christ also suffered for us leaving us an example for us to follow in His steps. Christ doesn't want us to just suffer, but He wants us to respond to our difficult circumstances and trials in the same way that He did. In Everything that our Lord faced He completely entrusted Himself to the Father. Right before His death in Luke 23:46 we read - "And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Thy hands I commit My spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last." Christ committed His whole life to the Father right up to His death. This last statement that Christ made on the cross is a quote from Psalm 31. The psalmist says this in verse 5 - "Into Thy hand I commit my spirit; Thou hast ransomed me, O LORD, God of truth." The psalmist said it about his life. The Lord quoted it at His death. Christ "kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously." Entrusting ourselves to the Lord is a constant action, but it's something that we can do without fear, because He is a righteous Judge, so we can trust Him to do the right thing as well as the best thing in every situation we face. As well as a righteous Judge, He is also a faithful Creator. In 1 Peter 4:19 Peter carries this same theme about suffering, and this is what he says - "Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right." Just as Christ kept entrusting Himself to God, we're told that those who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust themselves to God, the faithful Creator. Christ suffered for the will of God and entrusted Himself to God, and in the same way our suffering for doing right is according to the will of God and we need to follow Christs example by entrusting ourselves to Him no matter what. Paul knew this same truth and so he says in 2 Timothy 1:12 - "For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day." Paul experienced great sufferings for Christ and through it all He followed Christs example by committing himself completely to God. He had the realization that God was totally trustworthy. He was convinced of the faithfulness of our Creator, the righteous Judge. In all our circumstances we need to continually entrust ourselves to Christ. He is in control. He knows what He's doing. He has a specific plan just for you, and He is faithful to carry out that plan in us if we will only entrust ourselves to Him.
1 Peter 2:21-24 - "For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed."
