God Knows Our Deeds (1-29-12)

2 Kings 19:27 - "But I know your sitting down, and your going out and your coming in, and your raging against Me."

In 2 Kings chapter 19 and in Isaiah chapter 37 we're given a historical account of the children of Israel, under the leadership of king Hezekiah, being threatened by the king and people of Assyria. Rabshakeh, a servant of the king of Assyria, was sent by him to Jerusalem to bring a message of destruction and frighten the people of God. Twice this man came to the city and spoke discouraging words to the people, demanding that they surrender and speaking lies against the one true God. All the words that he spoke were written in a letter and given to Hezekiah king of Judah. When he heard all these things, Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord and prayed to God. And in response to his prayer God sent Isaiah the prophet with a message for Hezekiah against the king of Assyria. I'm not going to focus on the whole message that God gave to him, but just one small part of it. In 2 Kings 19:27 and Isaiah 37:28 the Lord says this about the king of Assyria - "But I know your sitting down, and your going out and your coming in, and your raging against Me."
The Lord says "I know." God knows everything that every individual is doing and thinking, He  knows it all. Concerning the king of Assyria He says "I know your sitting down and your going out and your coming in and your raging against Me." Nothing that this king did was hidden from the eyes or the knowledge of God, and this is true of every one of us. I'm sure it was a great comfort to king Hezekiah that God knew everything that this wicked king was doing. When we realize that God know about those who are causing us fear or anxiety or worry or sorrow, when we realize that God knows everything that they do it gives us great comfort. The Lord says concerning Himself in Jeremiah 23:23-24 - "Am I a God who is near,” declares the LORD, “And not a God far off? “Can a man hide himself in hiding places So I do not see him?” declares the LORD. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the LORD." He sees and knows it all. His complete knowledge of every individual can either be very comforting to us or it can be very frightening. If we're walking before God in integrity and living a life that seeks to serve and please Him the fact that He knows is very comforting. But if we have hidden sins in our lives, sins that we've become comfortable in and we think we've done a pretty good job of hiding, then the fact that God knows is a cause for fear in our lives.
The Psalmist picked up on this thought in Psalm 139. In verses 1-6 we read - "O LORD, Thou hast searched me and known me. Thou dost know when I sit down and when I rise up; Thou dost understand my thought from afar. Thou dost scrutinize my path and my lying down, and art intimately acquainted with all my ways. Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O LORD, Thou dost know it all. Thou hast enclosed me behind and before, And laid Thy hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is too high, I cannot attain to it."
