The Word of God is the Lords revelation of Himself to
mankind. We know what God is like because of what He has revealed about Himself
in His Word. But one of the clearest ways that God has revealed Himself to us
in His Word is through the Lord Jesus Christ, God incarnate. If you want to
know what God is like take a look at the Lord Jesus Christ. In John 1:18 the
apostle writes - "No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God
who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him." The Word of God
teaches that God is invisible. 1 Timothy 1:17 states - "Now to the King
eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever
and ever. Amen." However, the Lord God took on human flesh, the invisible
God took on a human body in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. We know that
the Son of God has come into the world, but why did He come into the world?
According to this verse, "The Son of God has come, and has given us
understanding so that we might know Him who is true." Well hang on
a minute, I thought that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners and
to give us eternal life. Which is it? Did He come to deliver us from
everlasting death into eternal life, or did He come in order that we might know
Him? Well the answer is obviously both, but as we look into these things we
discover that these two are actually one. They're two sides of the same coin,
and this becomes very evident in a statement that the Lord Jesus makes in His
prayer to the Father in John chapter 17. In verse 3 He says - "This is eternal life, that they may know Thee,
the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent." To Know God is eternal life. And now we can say with the
apostle that we know Him. It's an amazing reality that we can say we know God.
And this isn't by our own doing. God is the one who came down to us. He's the
one who revealed Himself to us. The Lord says in Jeremiah 24:7 - "I
will give them a heart to know Me, for I am the Lord;
and they will be My people, and I will be their God, for they will return to Me
with their whole heart." It is God who is at work in you first to will and
then to do of His good pleasure. Christianity can be boiled down to this
statement "To know Him." This is our primary objective, and since God
is eternal we will never come to a point where we have exhausted Him. There is
always more of Christ. Even the apostle Paul, a seasoned, mature believer, stated
this as the goal of his life in Philippians 3:10 - "That I may know
Him."
1 John 5:20 - "And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life."
