Ezekiel 36:26-27 - "Moreover, I will give you a new
heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from
your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and
cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My
ordinances.
Here in these two verses God uses the word spirit twice. In verse 26 He says "I will... put a new spirit within you" and in verse 27 He says "I will put My Spirit within you". He's not repeating Himself, He's talking about two different things here. You'll notice that one begins with a little s and the other begins with a big S, but that's not the only difference in these two words.
The first time God uses this word He's talking about, what we might call, our inner man. So God says "I will put a new spirit in you" He says He will change our inner selves. And this is exactly what He does for every person who gives their life to Him. It's put this way in 2 Corinthians 5:17 - "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come." This is what we call being born again. 1 Peter 1:23 says - "for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God."
So this new spirit God says He will give us is an inner change that He puts in us when we come to Him, but it doesn't end there, because He goes on to say "I will put My Spirit within you" This Spirit is the third person of the Godhead. Every believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. In Acts 1:8 Jesus says - "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." The Holy Spirit is the one who enables us to do Gods work. So when we get saved, not only does God change us inside, change our desires our hopes our passion, but He also comes into our lives and enables us to live for Him.
