Philippians 3:7-11 - "But whatever things were gain to
me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that,
I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ
Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them
but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a
righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith
in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I
may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His
sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the
resurrection from the dead."
At the beginning of Philippians 3 Paul talks about all the things that were gain to him. He gives his credentials and says that if anyone had a reason to boast in the flesh it was him. However, when he came into a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ his whole value system changed. Those things that were gain to him before lost their value. All the things he thought he could boast in he realized that they amounted to nothing. So he says "whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord." In all reality a relationship with Jesus Christ is the only thing that has any value.
Along these same lines, Paul says in Colossians 2:2-3 - "that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."
There is nothing of any value apart from Christ, and the deeper we grow in our relationship with and knowledge of Him the wealthier we become.
