Isaiah 26:8-9 - "Indeed, while following the way of Thy judgments, O Lord, we have waited for Thee eagerly; Thy name, even Thy
memory, is the desire of our souls. At night my soul longs for Thee, indeed, my
spirit within me seeks Thee diligently; For when the earth experiences Thy
judgments the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness."
It's a dangerous thing to become indifferent about our relationship with God. We need to constantly be growing in our relationship with Him, and we should have a longing in our souls to be close to Him. Look at what the prophet said: "we have waited for Thee eagerly" Do we eagerly wait on the Lord to speak to us? Do we wait in anticipation of what God wants to say to us, or do we simply read His Word out of a sense of duty or obligation? God delights in those who wait on Him, and these are the ones that He blesses. Isaiah 64:4 says - "For from days of old they have not heard or perceived by ear, nor has the eye seen a God besides Thee, Who acts in behalf of the one who waits for Him." And also in Isaiah 40:31 he says - "But those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up on wings like eagles, they shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and not faint." The one who waits on God and longs after God, He fills and satisfies with Himself. Look at what the prophet says next: "Thy name, even Thy memory, is the desire of our souls. At night my soul longs for Thee, indeed, my spirit within me seeks Thee diligently." Do we have that longing for God? Do you hunger and thirst for God, and is His name and memory the desire of your soul? The truth is that God is the only one who can satisfy a thirsty soul. This is the desire that David expressed in Psalm 42:1-2 - "As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for Thee, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God?" And in Psalm 143:5-6 he says - "I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Thy doings; I muse on the work of Thy hands. I stretch out my hands to Thee; My soul longs for Thee, as a parched land." And also in Psalm 63:1 he says - "O God, Thou art my God; I shall seek Thee earnestly; My soul thirsts for Thee, my flesh yearns for Thee, in a dry and weary land where there is no water." He describes his soul as a deer panting for the water and as a desert land where there is no water. But God loves it when we come to this place of longing for Him, and He pours Himself out upon our dry and thirsty souls and satisfies our longing for Him. Isaiah 30:18 says - "Therefore the Lord longs to be gracious to you, and therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you. For the Lord is a God of justice; How blessed are all those who long for Him."
In Psalm 63 which I referenced before, David begins the psalm with a longing for God and throughout the psalm he begins to meditate on God and His works and begins to praise Him, and by time we get half way through it he proclaims, "My soul is satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth offers praises with joyful lips."
Psalm 107:8-9 - "Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness, and for His wonders to the sons of men! For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, and the hungry soul He has filled with what is good."
