Ecclesiastes 3:11 - "He has made everything beautiful
in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot
find out what God has done from the beginning to the end."
God has put eternity into the hearts of men. Eternity is something that we really cannot comprehend. We can try and think about before God created anything, back before anything existed other than Him, and we can't understand how God cloud exist forever before time. We could also spend time thinking about eternity future and trying to imagine life forever and ever with no end and we can't wrap our minds around that either. Inside the heart of every human being God has put this idea of eternity. All mankind has the concept of life after death and can't help but wonder what's going to happen after we die. We have this idea that there has to be more than just this life, and God is the one who put that idea in us.
God is eternal. Psalm 90:1-2 says - "Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were born or Thou didst give birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God." In this Psalm, written by Moses the "man of God", he is glorying in the wonder of God's eternality. And after focusing on God's eternality he talks about mans mortality. He talks about the brevity of life and in verse 12 he says - "So teach us to number our days, that we may present to You a heart of wisdom." James 4:14 says our lives are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. And Psalm 39:5 says - "Behold, Thou hast made my days as handbreadths, And my lifetime as nothing in Thy sight; Surely every man at his best is a mere breath. Selah."
We need to spend time considering eternity that our lives may be impacted. Forever is a long time, how are we using our lives for eternity? How can we use the short time that we have to grow closer to the eternal God and impact others for eternity?
