This chapter has the story of the woman at the well. After
she spoke with Jesus she went and told the people of the city, and we read in verses
39-42 - “And from that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of
the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all the things that I
have done." So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to
stay with them; and He stayed there two days. Many more believed because of His
word; and they were saying to the woman, "It is no longer because of what
you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this
One is indeed the Savior of the world.””
There must have been a great change in this woman. It doesn't sound like she was a very honorable or trustworthy person, but it says many of the Samaritans believed because of her word. So they persuaded Him to stay longer and many more believed because of His word. And they say the reason for their belief changed. They no longer believed simply from her testimony, but because they heard the Savior themselves.
Hearing what God has done for others can certainly cause belief, but personal experience is so much more powerful. Once the people heard the woman they did believe, but once they personally heard the Savior, they said, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world."
