2 Peter 1:5-7
"Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith
supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your
knowledge, self control, and in your self control, perseverance..."
Step 1: Faith
Step 2: Moral excellence
Step 3: Knowledge
Step 4: Self control
Step 5: Perseverance
Perseverance (also called endurance, patience, and steadfastness) Is keeping a steady course despite hardship. Everything we believe in we believe by faith. And sometimes we can lose focus and get caught up in the things of this world, the things that are seen and lose focus on the things that are unseen, which are the things that really matter. We need perseverance so that we do not lose focus on the unseen or become weary in living for them.
In Romans 5 and James 1 we're told how we can obtain perseverance.
Romans 5:3 -"we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance."
James 1:2-4 -"Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."
Nobody enjoys tribulation, or trials, or hardships, but that is the only way we can get more endurance. To be honest, there have been several times that I've wanted more patience, but was afraid to ask God for some because I knew that if I did I would be tried. (the testing of your faith produces endurance)
Trials and tribulations are not enjoyable things, so why would God make us go through that? Well, when life is running along smoothly we really don't see a need for God. If we don't need saved from anything then why do we need a Savior? However, when our world gets turned upside down, we realize that we're not the ones in charge and that there is nothing better we could do than depend one the One who is. We start to focus on what really matters. Also, when things are going well, we don't really think about heaven that much, but when we're going through trials we can't wait to get there.
In James 5:11 it says, "We count those blessed who endured You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord's dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful."
The story of Job is an awesome story of endurance. God allowed Satan to test Jobs faith, and he lost everything he owned as well as his health. But something he said stood out to me.
Job 23:10 -"When He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold."
Whenever gold is put through a fire it always comes out more valuable. And the hotter the fire the more valuable it becomes. But no matter how hot it gets, the gold is never burned up. We are gold. No fire will ever be to hot for us to pass through (by Gods grace), but God uses trials and tribulations to melt away the dross of the world in our lives and make us pure gold for His kingdom.

1 Peter 1:4-7 -"to obtain an inheritance which is
imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,
who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be
revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a
little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that
the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable,
even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and
honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
