Psalm 34 begins with a historical note. It says, "A
Psalm of David when he feigned madness before Abimelech, who drove him away and
he departed." The occasion this is talking about is found in 1 Samuel 21
where Saul was pursuing David seeking to kill him. So David was fleeing for his
life and he fled to a Philistine city, but the people there recognized him and
brought him to the king. So first off, David was in danger of his life from
Saul, and second, he was in danger from this Philistine king. In order to
escape though David pretended to be insane and the king said "Do I lack
madmen, that you have brought this one to act the madman in my presence?"
So they took him out and David escaped. And that is the context in which this
Psalm was written.
The verses I want to focus on right now are verses 17-19 which say - "The righteous cry, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord delivers him out of them all."
A lot of people think that when you become a christian all your problems disappear and your life becomes great, and that if anything bad happens to you than you must not be a very good christian. (I believe that's called the "prosperity gospel") But any believer who has the slightest biblical knowledge knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that that is certainly not the case. Verse 17 says - "The righteous cry, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles." It plainly says right here that the righteous man has troubles. We can be so troubled sometimes that we are moved even to the point of shedding tears, but God knows. And He is still in control. "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves those are crushed in spirit." Even the righteous cry and have troubles. Even christians can be brokenhearted and crushed in spirit, but even in these times of darkness, when God seems distant and we don't know how to make it through God is there. He hears us and delivers us. He draws near to us even in our lowest moments and saves us.
Verse 19 - "Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord delivers him out of them all." The Lord says right here in His word that "many are the afflictions of the righteous" But with this fact also comes a promise. Though our trials, troubles, and afflictions are many God promises to deliver us out of them all. David was no stranger to hardship, and there were several times when his life was threatened, but he knew that God is a God of deliverance. He knew that God draws near to comfort the broken and afflicted, and that He sees each tear that falls and hears us when we call. Whatever troubles, trials, pains, hardships, whatever sorrows we're experiencing, God knows and cares, and He is the one who will bring you through it.
Jesus said in John 16:33 - "These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."
Jesus Himself told us that we will have tribulation in this world, but rather then dreading it we can confidently rest in Him because He has overcome the world.
